Ok, I’m going to keep it completely 100. I had a hidden agenda and a preconceived notion when I sent out the survey. I assumed most people got married either from fear of being old and alone, pressure from their mate, or because they are “supposed to” after a certain point. I attributed these reasons to the increasing high divorce rate. I was dead wrong! Many of the answers were well thought out and full of compassion. Below I will list the questions I asked and some of the more memorable answers.
Questions
Age:
Gender:
Are\were your parents married?
Are you married?
If not, do you want to to be married eventually?
Why did you choose your answer? (Please be as detailed as possible.)
If you are married, why did you get married?
Answers
I am that much better being part of a team. I want someone to share a common (or complementary) dream/goal so we can build something (life, love, and business) together.
I would like to be married eventually. For the longest time I believed that marriage was one of those things that you just did because it was a natural stage in life. College (check), marriage (check), babies (check)…..but now, marriage is important to me for much more than that. Marriage is all about the bond that you build with someone that is so strong that it will withstand anything. Marriage is the team that you create that will forge against the world’s elements that threaten to break you down…it is about patience, love, and understanding…but most importantly, it is about being unselfish enough to give yourself to someone else. I do not believe in divorce and believe that the world is hard enough…why go at it alone?
I want to live a full and happy life - not sure that marriage would support that.
I got married because the man is my best friend. he is my main support and he is true in every way possible. Financially, he has it together and is striving for better. I always told myself that I wanted to find the best role model for my future kids. I did!
Because I would like to spend my days intimately with someone I love and that loves me; someone who could be my companion forever.
I believe marriage is the corner stone of the family. There is no value in being a girlfriend or fiance forever. Marriage is the next step after courting/ dating. My religious beliefs shaped my thoughts on the importance of marriage. I love and respect my husband. It is for life..
I want to share my life with someone who will be there through thick and thin. I want to eventually have children and want them to be able to see healthy relationship so that they can be functional as well.
Because I believe in marriage and want to make sure I procreate for the sustainibility of the African American community.
Life is about living for others and helping other people. Marriage is about being completed and whole by the one man or woman God has designed for you. It’s my belief that together you are meant to do great works together to procreate other beings that foster the same beliefs

I think marriage is a good thing…nobody really wants to return to an empty home and isolation is no fun. I would like to think that when your married one would egage in less risky bahavior because they would feel responsible for their family. I also think think that marriage can be benefical to ones health and it contributes to longevity.
