It is utterly amazing to me that the thought of just being raised 7 miles (Montclair) away from this city, has always remained supplanted in my mind as a place of light years away, let alone a constant perception of a third world like-country, riddled of pure lawlessness.
As a resident now living in Atlanta, and having visited or lived in most of the major cities here in America, Newark is and still is the ONLY city that scares the hell out of me!
No South Central, no Southside Chicago, no Harlem, no Bronx, no Bedsty, no D.C., no Philly, no Miami, no Detroit, nowhere - Just hardcore NEWARK, NEW JERSEY! One of the most notorious cities in America.
It is the closest to any city that I’ve been to that defines an entire city of urban decay.
Whereas on the otherhand, I honestly believe that 20 years from now, it will be one of the most saught after cities in the northeast corridors to live in. It will be a true model of “New Urbanism” at its finest.
I’ve spent considerable time in Newark over the past 7-8 years. The city has just been run into the depths over a 20 year period or so, and the problems are deeply ingrained.
The city needs an education BOMB set off to counteract the years of neglect. In the time it takes for the slow solution of education to take effect all officials can do is clean up and play referee.
Side note: I’ve always remarked how similar Newark’s relationship with NYC is to that of Oakland, and San Francisco. I wonder what common solutions they can share.

It’s sad and depressing.
And oh yeah, I do still have family there…
