Songs That Got Me Through 2009

Rick Ross “Valley of Death” This is only a snippet of the song, but the 3rd and last verse gets played in my car & home often.. just for the line “Only live once and I got 2 kids, and for me to feed them I’d get 2 gigs.. I’d shovel sh*t, I’d CEO so we can bow our head and pray over the meatloaf”. Now i dont have any kids but that line reflects how i feel about the things I hold true in my life.. to keep the things that i admire in my life, I’d check all of my pride and sacrifice it all.

Mikkey Halsted “My Life” I had the chance to kick it with Mikkey in Chicago last year and dude was truly down to earth… he was all about growing the community, so much that he was still holding an administrative position with the Chicago school system because he truly lives the cliche remark that our kids are the future.. he mentors several young black adults making sure they stay out of the streets and don’t let evil grasp their idle hands.. this track gets rotation when I am having introspective moments in the crib… whether i’m about to write to you or if I just need to refocus and make sure I’m staying on the right track.. this sparks memories of being a young buck and lets me relive my timeline until this day.

Nneka “Heartbeat” This is one of my background songs.. Its actually playing right now and behind a good 30% of the blogs when i wrote in ‘09. I just get into a rhythm when i hear this song.. it zones me out but the chorus brings my energy back and my fingers lose themselves on Twitter and on here.

Will.I.Am “She’s A Star” This is the kind of music that I love doing work to.. I can zone out and work without even feeling it.. I can’t stand doing work that feels tedious. All I need is a couple good songs shuffled on a playlist, one good thought and a glass within arms reach.. Homie I get loose off of Orange Juice!

Lashun Pace “I Know I’ve Been Changed” Now everyone gets a different meaning from music and art in general.. There are truly times in my life that i realize that I have made grave sacrifices and have lost many things and friends all due to road that I have chosen.. When I play this song, I think about each and every sacrifice that i can remember and I can confidently reassure myself that I made the decision with my best intentions in mind. I know this video was a little shakey but I wanted you to see the power of her voice when she sung.. for a better audio quality version.. the one i listen to. you can click HERE
