You may remember AkaTito’s blog series about “Fitting the Stereotype” and his current boycott list including but not limited to McDonalds, Hilshire Farms, etc.. Well McDonalds has topped itself again with this McDonalds Dollar Van Hip Hop campaign ..

So…. take something that is authentically New York like the dollar van and whore it out to McDonald’s using bad hip hop and R&B. This is why Dave Chappelle decided to discontinue his show… because people are too damn dumb to know when they are being made fun of. I can’t even be upset with McDonald’s because the truth of it is…. this will be accurate way to reach some of “The Black Demographic.” For those who care, pay attention to how they reach the White and Asian demographic… I guarantee there won’t be any singin’ dancin’ or dollar vans.

So, who you mad at Tito? and Why?
Seems like exposure for the artists.
Heck man Lauren Hill was in Sister Act, the Whoopi Goldberg movie before the Fugees jumped off.

I saw this when I was in Florida a few weeks ago. Exposing new hip-hop artist is a great thing to do, of course. Did it have to be McDonald’s doing it? Well, it got our attention.
They are doing what they do best. You can’t hate them for that…
What are ‘WE’ doing to afford the same opportunities with the same hype?…
Should we demand they stop? Demand they make better food? What?
The reality is, in this economy, who do you think is buying their food ($1 menu)? …Those with low-income. And right now, well, I’m sure you see where I’m going.
Again, what are ‘WE’ doing to help this situation?
As for the singing and dancing, well, no other culture relates to that - so of course they won’t use it.
Urban marketing is tricky. There are plenty of people (of color) who do it and make a living from it…and they sometimes use the same tactics (e.g. Music, hip-hop, poetry, dancing, etc.).
I wouldn’t be surprised if ARU was approached in the near future to do something similar.

I applaud the creativity of the artists in the campaign and I support the Arts but using our culture, “Hip Hop”, founded on Health, Wealth, Knowledge of Self and Street Entrepreneurialsm to add value to their, “Dollar Menu”, is a campaign I disagree with.
